Marilyn Symmes began her career at the Smith College Museum of Art, followed by years of curatorial work at the Detroit Institute of Arts; the Toledo Museum of Art; Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum; and, recently, at the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University. She has authored numerous publications and has organized almost 100 exhibitions featuring prints, photographs, artist-illustrated books, and drawings; in addition, she has authored numerous publications.
